The disturbing moment took place during Thursday's coverage of the championship, while seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry was speaking during a break in BBC coverage. In the background, over Hendry's left shoulder, the man could be seen nibbling on the minor's ear after appearing to whisper in his ear.
The boy, apparently unaware that he was being seen on the livestream, then smiled and waved at the camera as the man walked away. The images quickly went viral after a fan posted them on social media, generating more than 12 million views and 58,000 likes.
South Yorkshire Police have confirmed they are reviewing the footage and taking action. A spokesperson for the World Snooker Tour also stated that they are aware of the incident and that it is now a police matter.
