Salmonella outbreak at Hundred Madrid: Several customers affected

A salmonella outbreak affects 16 customers of Hundred Madrid, linked to an egg yolk sauce

A salmonella outbreak has affected 16 customers of the Hundred burger joint in Madrid, recognised as the third best in the world. The probable cause of the outbreak is a truffled egg yolk sauce used in the Leslie Chow burger, one of the least sold products on the menu.

Hundred, a burger joint founded by Álex González and Ezequiel Maldijan, has been a success since its opening in Valencia in 2020, later expanding to Madrid. The burger joint reached the top 10 in the *The World's Best Burgers* ranking. However, this week, it has faced a crisis due to a possible outbreak of salmonella.

The news of the poisoning was released on Thursday, August 8, although the incidents occurred days before. Company sources indicated that the outbreak was linked to a batch of truffle egg yolk sauce, exclusive to the Leslie Chow burger, which also includes smoked white cheddar cheese, black truffle cream, parmesan flakes and caramelized onion, priced at 13.5 euros.

The affected burgers were sold between Sunday, August 4 at 9:30 p.m. and Monday, August 5 at 9:30 p.m., exclusively at the Eloy Gonzalo and Plaza de Pedro Zerolo locations, as well as through the delivery service. The General Directorate of Public Health of the Community of Madrid has confirmed 16 cases of salmonellosis, three of which required hospitalization, although the patients are progressing favorably.

Health authorities suspect that the truffled egg yolk sauce is the cause of the outbreak. Reported symptoms include diarrhea, fever and general malaise. Pending the results of microbiological analysis, the company has recalled batches of the sauce and contacted the supplier.

In response to the outbreak, Madrid City Council and the Chamberí district Health Department carried out an immediate inspection. Hundred has fully cooperated with health authorities and has contacted those potentially affected to offer its support. The company issued a statement on Instagram informing customers who may have consumed the burger.

Hundred has temporarily closed its premises for maintenance, taking advantage of the low season in August. The chain assures that the outbreak is under control and there are no serious cases. Despite the incident, Hundred remains one of the most popular burger joints in Madrid, attracting fans from around the world.
