A shooting leaves at least 16 dead and dozens injured

In the United States, there have been more than 500 mass shootings so far this year

In a series of violent shootings in the town of Lewiston, Maine, at least 16 people have been killed and between 50 and 60 have reportedly been injured. The news was confirmed by CNN and CBS.

The suspect, identified as Robert Card, 40, has been linked to attacks on several businesses in the city, including a bowling alley, Sparetime Recreation, and a restaurant called Schemengees Bar & Grille, as well as a distribution center Walmart. Card, described as "a person of interest" by authorities, remains missing. Police have warned the public to consider him armed and extremely dangerous.

The Maine Department of Public Safety urged citizens to remain in their homes, keeping all doors closed. Additionally, the sheriff's office distributed images of the suspect, showing Card holding an assault rifle.

Despite initial reports of the number of casualties, Maine Safety Commissioner Mike Sauscuch did not confirm the exact figure at a news conference. However, he reported that a vehicle that presumably belongs to the suspect had been located.

The suspect's profile reveals a tumultuous past. Robert Card is a retired United States Army sergeant, with experience as a shooting instructor and weapons expert. It was discovered that he had a criminal record, including arrests for domestic violence, he has been divorced twice and is the father of three children.
