Tragic femicide in Cali: Luz Mery Tristán, world skating champion, murdered

Luz Mery Tristán, world skating champion, was murdered on the night of Saturday, August 5, 2023, apparently at the hands of her sentimental partner, inside her residence located in a condominium on the road that leads to the hill of Cristo Rey.

The body of the renowned athlete was lifted in the early hours of Sunday, August 6, leaving her loved ones and the entire sports community in the country shocked. Although the Police and the Cali Secretary of Security and Justice have not issued an official statement, it has been reported that the alleged murderer is already in the custody of the authorities.

The mayor of Cali, Jorge Iván Ospina, expressed his regret and sent condolences to the family of Luz Mery Tristán through his social networks. "We express our condolences to the family of Luz Mery Tristán, everything indicates a femicide caused by her partner. We urge the Prosecutor's Office to carry out a thorough and rapid investigation that means an exemplary sentence. The death of our champion fills us with pain and sadness," said the leader.




According to an anonymous source, the woman was dating a businessman from the city, who was apparently under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the events. It would have been known that the couple had plans to get married in October, they had even already sent invitations. The source indicated that he was able to speak with Luz Mery on Friday, but they had no communication on Saturday.

Luz Mery Tristán, 60 years old, was born in Pereira but grew up in Cali from the first months of her life. Her legacy in Colombian skating is unforgettable. In 1990, she won the first World Figure Skating Championship in the 5000 meter event in Bello, Antioquia. In addition, she stood out in the National Skating Championship in 1980, the Pan-American Skating Championship and the Ibero-American Championship in Argentina.

After retiring from her professional career, since 2006 Luz Mery Tristán has directed a sports center with her name, located in the south of Cali, where she trained several promising Colombian sports.
