Police confront six criminals in attempted robbery and kill one of them

A suspect surrenders after an attempted robbery in Teresina that left a military police officer injured and a criminal dead

TERESINA, BRAZIL – A suspect identified as João Pedro da Silva Santos, 21, surrendered this Monday (9) to the Department of Homicide and Personal Protection (DHPP) for his alleged participation in an attempted robbery that left a Military Police sergeant seriously injured and one of the criminals dead. The incident occurred in the early morning in the Alto da Ressurreição neighborhood, southeast of Teresina.

The attack, captured by security cameras, shows Sergeant Jurandir Pereira de Oliveira opening the trunk of a car in front of a bakery when he was approached by two men on a motorcycle. One of the attackers got out and began a struggle with the officer. At that moment, a car with four occupants arrived at the scene and three of them got out to join the attempted robbery.

The sergeant managed to get away from the first attacker and, when threatened with gunfire, he took out his service weapon and responded to the attack. While fleeing, one of the assailants on the motorcycle was hit by a shot, falling dead on the sidewalk of a nearby establishment.

Sergeant Oliveira suffered serious injuries from bullet impacts to the chest that pierced some organs. He was initially transferred to an Emergency Care Unit (UPA) and then to the Teresina Emergency Hospital (HUT), where he underwent surgery. His health condition remains critical.

Delegate Bruno Ursulino reported that João Pedro, who was identified as the possible gunman who shot the officer, denied his involvement in the attack, although he admitted to having been present. At least six people actively participated in the robbery, with the suspicion that others could have also provided logistical support.

Another man appeared before the DHPP on the same Monday afternoon to deny his involvement in the crime, although he was arrested due to a previous arrest warrant for robbery.

The vehicles used in the crime, a motorcycle and a car, were recovered by the authorities. The motorcycle is registered in the name of an individual with a criminal record, while the car, which had damage to its front end, had been reported stolen. The police contacted the owner to return the vehicle.

The images captured by the security cameras are key in the investigation. Delegate Francisco Costa pointed out that "everything indicates that it was a case of self-defense." According to the authorities, the criminals probably did not know that the victim was a military policeman, as they were trying to steal his car.

Authorities are still searching for the other suspects who managed to escape from the scene after the failed robbery attempt.
