Mother denounces lynching of her son after turning him over to the authorities
The mother of Ismael N., the young man lynched and burned alive in Tekit, Yucatan, asks for an investigation into his crime
Tekit, Yucatan. Ismael N., alias "El Wero", accused of a crime, was lynched and burned alive by a group of residents. His mother, Leticia Canché, who had convinced him to turn himself in to the authorities, now calls for justice for his death.
According to reports, Ismael N. beat an elderly woman identified as Candy to death with a log. After the crime, the young man took refuge in his house and hid on the roof. Leticia Canché, his mother, upon learning of the situation, decided to convince him to turn himself in to the State Investigation Police (PEI) to face justice.
However, the situation was not as this woman expected. An angry crowd surrounded the house demanding that Ismael be handed over.
Once in police custody and inside a patrol car, the young man was unable to reach the police station. As soon as the vehicle had gone a few meters, it was intercepted by the residents, who forcibly removed him.
They beat him, doused him with gasoline and, before everyone's eyes, set him on fire.
Doña Leticia says that her son should answer to the law, but not die in an inhumane way. According to her testimony, among those responsible for the lynching there were alleged sellers of illegal substances who negatively influenced Ismael's life. Now, she demands an investigation so that her son's murder does not go unpunished.
After the incident, the mother traveled to Ticul, the municipal capital of Tekit, to claim her son's body and bury him.
