He called 911 for help and died after being mistaken for police

A father from Nevada was shot dead after calling 911 to report a home invasion. The case has sparked outrage and lawsuits

A devastating event in Henderson, Nevada, has left a family shattered after the death of Brandon Durham, a 43-year-old father, who was shot dead by a police officer after calling 911 to report a home invasion at his home. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, November 12, when Durham was seeking protection for himself and his 15-year-old daughter.

Durham alerted police about two men who tried to enter his home after firing shots outside the property. According to her 911 call, she locked herself in the bathroom with her daughter while waiting for officers to arrive.

When police arrived at the scene, they immediately entered. Body camera footage showed Officer Alexander Bookman, 26, confronting Durham, who was in his underwear holding the home invader, Alejandra Boudreaux, 31, in a struggle with a knife.

Bookman instructed Durham to drop the gun, but just two seconds after giving the order, he fired at him, hitting him in the head. Even though Durham fell to the ground, recordings show that Bookman fired five more shots, even when he was no longer moving.

After the shooting, police discovered that Durham was the owner of the house and had called for help. Although they tried to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, Boudreaux was arrested and faces multiple charges, including burglary with a deadly weapon, assault and endangering child safety.

A criminal complaint revealed that Boudreaux may have planned a “suicide by cop,” using the confrontation to prompt a lethal response. Additionally, security footage shows that he remained near the home for 10 minutes before attempting to force his way inside.

Durham’s family expressed outrage, claiming that the police action was excessive and hasty. Isabella, his daughter, described her father as the “ultimate victim,” condemning the violence that resulted in his orphanhood.

Durham’s partner, Rachel G., lamented that the system failed. “You call the police for help and you end up getting killed,” she said. Close friends described Durham as an energetic person, passionate about sports and with a charming character.

A GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $9,800 to support Isabella and her family in the wake of the loss.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has launched an internal investigation, while Officer Bookman is on paid administrative leave. The case is also being reviewed by the Clark County District Attorney's Office, which will determine whether criminal charges will be filed against the officer.

Sheriff's Deputy Dorie Coren acknowledged the complexity of cases like this, but friends and family are demanding justice and a thorough review of police procedures to prevent similar tragedies.
