London, United Kingdom – An incident shook the residents of the Islington area last Friday, December 13, when a man set himself on fire in front of horrified onlookers, in an episode that occurred after a domestic dispute in a house on North Road, N7.
The Metropolitan Police were called at around 9:25 in the morning after receiving reports of a domestic disturbance. According to the images shared by several users on social networks, the man can be seen with his hands on his head before falling to his knees, engulfed in bright orange flames.
Officers present at the scene, along with some bystanders, reacted quickly to put out the fire. In the video, a man can be seen asking for more water as another officer tried to remove the man's jacket to reduce the intensity of the flames. He was eventually sprayed with foam from fire extinguishers before being rushed to hospital.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed that the victim was treated in hospital but his condition was not life-threatening. They did not mention the state of the burns on his body.
A police officer also suffered minor burns while trying to put out the flames and also received medical treatment before being released.
The London Ambulance Service said they sent several teams to the scene, including the air ambulance, to treat both the man and the injured officer.
