Councilman shot dead on the sidewalk of his house

The councilor and former police officer was shot dead. The crime was witnessed by a resident and captured on video

Councilor and former police officer Erasmo Morais was shot dead on the sidewalk of his house in Crato, Ceará, Brazil. The event occurred last Tuesday in Bairro Mirandão, near the victim's residence. According to reports from the Military Police, two men were seen in a truck shooting at Morais, who received more than 10 rifle shots.

Security camera video captured the moment of the attack, showing the councilman's car parked on the sidewalk. When Morais exited the vehicle, two individuals got out of another car and opened fire before fleeing the scene.

Forensic experts who attended the scene counted 47 shell casings scattered on the ground, indicating the brutality of the attack.

A resident who witnessed the shooting shared her testimony, describing the scene as terrifying. "When I left, he was already dead and the suspects were no longer there. He [the councilman] was going to pick up his autistic son from school and they killed him when he was leaving the house," she said.

Morais, who had taken over as a substitute and was a pre-candidate for councilor in the next elections, had a controversial past. Expelled from the police in 1995 for crimes of extortion and criminal association, he had been arrested on multiple occasions, including 'Operation Earthquake' in 2010, where he was accused of extorting money from owners of cloned vehicles.

So far, no one has been arrested in connection with the crime, and the investigation remains ongoing under the confidentiality of the Crato Regional Police Station.
