Man arrested for confessing to murder of Kevelin Sofia

The disappearance of Kevelin Sofia Campos Pereira on Friday, March 29, shocked the population of Jardim Itaguaçu 2 in Campinas. The girl, 10, was last seen leaving her house around 11 a.m. to buy soda at a nearby store. Her mother's report to the police began a desperate search that culminated in the discovery of her body in a construction zone on Saturday morning, March 30.

Fernando Silva dos Santos, 32, a neighbor of the victim, was identified as a suspect in the crime due to his similar criminal history. Neighbors and family members pointed him out as the person responsible, and after his arrest, Santos confessed to having abused and murdered Kevelin Sofia. He provided details about the crime, including the weapon used.

On the way, in fact, there is also the place where she was last seen alive. In a security camera recording, Kevelin Sofia is seen buying sodas and leaving the store.

The attacker lived in a house near the construction site where Kevelin Sofia's body was found. It was a construction worker who discovered her. He arrived to work on Saturday morning, March 30, and while carrying bricks to the back of the construction area around 7 a.m., he saw the victim wrapped in blankets and alerted the Military Police (PM).

The missing person report was filed by her mother, who also indicated that Kevelin Sofia had a credit card with her to make purchases at the nearby store, said credit card was not found.

The investigation is ongoing under the supervision of the DHPP (Homicide and Personal Protection Police Station). The case is registered as violence against vulnerable people and qualified homicide. Santos remains in police custody and will face charges in court. The fact that Fernando Silva dos Santos had already served a four-year sentence for abuse in 2017 causes outrage.
