A sudden flood in the Mutatá River, in the Urabá region of Antioquia, in Colombia, swept away seven people on June 3, causing a tragedy that has mobilized rescue teams.
So far, three people have been rescued alive, while the body of a woman has been recovered dead and three other people are still missing.
The events occurred in the tourist sector of Puentiadero, when heavy rains caused a sudden increase in the river's flow, reaching these people unexpectedly.
The woman found dead has been identified as Vanessa Pérez, 23 years old, whose body was found on the afternoon of June 5 after an intense search led by the Mutatá Fire Department and volunteers from the area.
Among the missing is Nicolás Pérez, son of Vanessa, a child of only four years old. His grandfather, Manuel Vicente López Moreno, has offered a reward of 3 million Colombian pesos ($760 USD) to whoever can find the little boy. In addition, they continue to search for two fishermen who were also swept away by the current and are not natives of Mutatá.
According to witnesses to the tragedy, Vanessa fought with all her strength against the current, desperately trying to save her son: "She fought until the end, unfortunately she couldn't save the child", said a witness.
Carlos Ríos, director of Dagran, called on the community to avoid activities near rivers during the rainy season, emphasizing the difficulties and dangers that these weather conditions represent.
"We are in a rainy season and we have been emphatic that this generates some difficulties as long as we are close to the riverbank, and that is why we have said that please do not hold events or recreational events near these sites," declared Ríos.
The authorities and rescue teams continue to work hard in the search for the missing, exploring the Mutatá River and its nearby tributaries.
