Mannheim, Germany – The German police officer who was seriously injured in a knife attack last Friday in Mannheim died this Sunday from his injuries. The agent, identified as L. Rouven, 29 years old, was attacked while trying to rescue one of the victims of the incident, Michael Johannes Stürzenberger, an anti-Islam activist and member of the far-right Pax Europa movement.
The attacker, a 25-year-old man born in Afghanistan and living in Germany, stabbed Stürzenberger in the leg and face before attacking the officer in the neck. The police officer, who had mistaken one of the six victims for the attacker, was taken to the hospital in critical condition and remained in a coma until his death.
The attacker was neutralized by another agent and shot several times. He was taken to the hospital in serious condition and underwent emergency surgery. Despite his critical condition, he is still alive but is in no condition to be interrogated. The German Prosecutor's Office has issued an arrest warrant against him.
In response to this tragic event, a group of non-partisan activists has organized a vigil in Mannheim under the motto "Solidarity against violence, hatred and unrest."
Green Party councilor Gerhard Fontagnier has invited the community to join this peaceful rally, without slogans or flags, as an act of solidarity.
The initiative has the support of several local political forces and arises in response to a rally planned by the youth wing of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in Baden-Württemberg.
