Medical negligence: Nurse dies waiting for care at a clinic
Karen was kept waiting on a metal bench without receiving medical attention
The community of the municipality of Sabanalarga, in the center of the department of Atlántico, is outraged by a possible case of medical negligence. According to the complaint made by the relatives of Karen Margarita Pacheco González, 30, the young woman lost her life while she was waiting for care at a local clinic. The family demands a thorough investigation into what happened.
Adonay Pacheco Márquez, father of the deceased, reported that her daughter, who was a nurse, had relapsed from a viral condition that affects the region these days. On Friday, May 19, around noon, they went to the San Rafael Clinic for medical attention. However, according to Adonay Pacheco's complaint, Karen Margarita was placed on a bench at the medical center while she suffered from her deteriorating state of health.
"She remained lying on some aluminum benches without receiving prompt attention," said her father. Given the worrying conditions of her daughter, she decided to request her transfer to the Bonadona Clinic in Barranquilla, where she worked as a nursing assistant. However, she was met with the response that "her transfer could not be made due to restrictions."
In addition, Adonay Pacheco indicated that the San Rafael Clinic already had prior knowledge of Karen's health problem, since she had been treated there approximately a month and a half earlier, and her clinical record contained the patient's medical history.
"The clinic was aware of Karen's condition, as she had been hospitalized there before. Despite this, they practically let her decompensate," the father said sadly and helplessly. The woman, who left behind an 8-year-old daughter, died on May 21 due to respiratory arrest. The doctors explained that her hemoglobin level was 6, which caused the arrest.
Karen Margarita's family, like Adonay Pachecho, demands that an exhaustive investigation be carried out against the clinic and that those responsible for the alleged medical negligence that took the life of her daughter be punished.
