Heartbreaking Video: Mother Tries to Set Fire to Her House with Her Children Inside

A serious and shocking incident occurred on the morning of Monday, December 15, in the municipality of Niterói, in the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Region. A woman was arrested after being accused of attempting to set fire to her home with her children inside, an event that deeply shocked neighbors and authorities.

The incident took place in a house located on Suíça Street, in the Várzea das Moças neighborhood. The situation came to light when an 18-year-old managed to send a video to relatives desperately pleading for help, alerting them that her mother was trying to set fire to the house.

In the recording, the young woman appears with blood-stained clothing—presumably from a previous knife attack during an argument with her mother—while holding one of her younger siblings in her arms. Through tears, she reports that the woman was lighting the gas stove with the children still inside the house.

After receiving emergency calls, officers from the Military Police, belonging to the 12th BPM and with support from the Várzea das Moças Conspicuous Police Detachment, went to the scene. Upon arrival, the officers heard screams and pleas for help coming from inside the house, which was already engulfed in flames.

With the help of neighbors—who reported frequent conflicts and previous threats within the family—a rescue operation was immediately launched. To gain entry to the property, the officers were forced to demolish one of the exterior walls of the house.

Thanks to this intervention, two children, ages 1 and 7, identified as Miguel Borges Santos and Matheus Bruno Borges Jorge de Oliveira, were rescued alive, along with 18-year-old Mariana Luísa Borges de Oliveira, who had sent the video requesting help.

According to initial reports, the children did not suffer serious injuries from the fire, while the young woman sustained minor injuries.

The alleged perpetrator, 36-year-old Tainara Fernanda Borges Jorge, was arrested at the scene for attempted homicide. According to the Military Police, the woman appeared to be experiencing a psychological breakdown at the time of the incident.

She was subsequently transferred under police custody to the Alberto Torres State Hospital in the municipality of São Gonçalo, where she remains hospitalized in serious condition. Both the mother and her children were taken to the same medical center, although authorities have not yet officially updated their health status.
