Tourist electrocuted in Ixtapa hotel jacuzzi in front of family
The hotel's lack of maintenance, medical assistance, and response has sparked national outrage
What promised to be a family getaway by the sea ended in irreparable tragedy. Sagid Carreón Calderón, a father from Morelia, Michoacán, lost his life after receiving an electric shock in the jacuzzi of his room at the Pacífica Resort Ixtapa hotel in Guerrero. The unfortunate event occurred on the night of Tuesday, July 22, and was partially captured on video by his own family, who witnessed the moment everything spiraled out of control.
According to the testimony of his wife, Estefanía, they had noticed irregularities in their assigned villa since their arrival at the hotel. That night, Sagid, her family, and their children decided to use the jacuzzi, not imagining what would happen. As soon as they got in, Sagid began complaining of feeling "electric shocks." Thinking he was joking, his family laughed, but Estefanía also received a shock when she touched the water, which immediately alerted her.
The hydromassage system and jacuzzi lights were on. Although they turned them off, Sagid was visibly shaken, holding onto the railing and waiting for help. For at least 20 minutes, no hotel staff came to the room. Desperate, Estefanía asked one of her children to record what happened as evidence.
The footage shows Sagid staggering on the edge of the jacuzzi. As he tried to get out onto the terrace, he received a powerful electric shock. His body convulsed, and he fell to the floor, purple, his hands clenched. His mother-in-law pulled him from the water, and his wife performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but there was no timely medical assistance.
The hotel staff only sent a lifeguard with a defibrillator, which, according to the family, was not working. Sagid died at the scene. An autopsy confirmed an acute myocardial infarction as a direct result of electrocution.
Days later, outrage grew when it became known that the hotel failed to provide immediate medical attention or take responsibility. It wasn't until six days later that Pacífica Resort Ixtapa issued a brief statement, acknowledging the death of a guest and assuring them that they were collaborating with authorities.
The Guerrero Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation. However, the family's lawyers reported that the relevant forensic examinations had not been conducted and that they were even denied access to the premises when they tried to enter with independent experts. "We are afraid they will manipulate the scene," Estefanía said.
The tragedy sparked a backlash on social media, where thousands of users shared their outrage over what happened. Estefanía, in a post, warned other guests: "Be careful. My husband died here in the jacuzzi due to lack of maintenance. It wasn't our fault, and I have the video. I can show it to you."
