In a tragic incident that occurred in the El Carmen citadel, in Huaquillas, Ecuador, a woman identified as Briggitte Martínez lost her life after being hit by a truck.
The accident also left another woman, Lorena Elizalde, seriously injured; both women were not wearing a safety helmet.
The event took place around 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, at the intersection of Guayas and Camilo Ponce streets. According to witnesses, Martínez and Elizalde were traveling on a motorcycle after participating in medical sessions as officials of the Municipality of Huaquillas.
For reasons still under investigation, they were hit by a truck, causing the motorcycle to catch fire and be completely destroyed.
The truck driver fled the scene, leaving the two women unconscious on the ground. Local residents immediately came to help, covering the victims with sheets to protect them from the sun. Tragically, Martínez suffered serious head injuries.
An ambulance was called to the scene and Martínez was taken to the hospital, but doctors were unable to save her life due to the head trauma she suffered. On the other hand, Elizalde was taken in critical condition to the Teófilo Dávila hospital in Machala to receive specialized medical care.
It has been reported that both women had participated in a medical brigade organized by the Municipality of Huaquillas and were returning to their homes when the tragedy occurred.
The National Police has carried out an operation to locate the car involved in the accident. One person has been arrested and is under investigation as the alleged driver responsible for the incident.
