Without fraud: Partner of the deceased receives a large sum of money for his death

Chongqing police confirm there was no fraud in the case of the man who took his life after a breakup

Police in Chongqing, China, have confirmed there was no fraud in the tragic case of a man who took his life after a breakup and transferring large sums of money to his ex-girlfriend. The incident occurred when a man, known online as Pangmao, jumped from the Yangtze River bridge in Chongqing, southwest China, after sending a message to his ex-girlfriend, Tan, announcing the end of their relationship.

Pangmao transferred nearly 66,000 yuan ($9,135) to Tan on April 10, recording the transaction as a "voluntary gift." In the early hours of April 11, Pangmao told Tan that their relationship was over and shortly after, he took his own life. Following the incident, Pangmao's sister, surnamed Liu, accused Tan of fraud, leading to a thorough police investigation.

The Chongqing police published the results of their investigation this Sunday, May 26, reaffirming the couple's relationship and clarifying that Tan did not commit fraud.

According to the statement, Pangmao and Tan began their relationship in 2021 and in December 2023 they opened a flower shop together, with Pangmao contributing 70,000 yuan to the business. Throughout their relationship, they experienced several breakups and reconciliations until their final separation in April of this year.

Police verified the financial transactions between Pangmao and Tan, determining that the relationship between them was genuine and long-standing. Both visited each other's families and friends, and Tan did not commit any act of concealment or forgery to obtain property from Pangmao, which excludes the existence of fraud.

In the statement, the police also addressed the behavior of Liu, who posted private messages and other personal information of Tan on social media, creating an account to guide comments and expose Tan's personal information. Liu also contacted several people to win the sympathy from netizens, which resulted in Tan receiving abusive and threatening messages.

Liu has acknowledged her illegal conduct and the police are handling the matter in accordance with the law. After the incident was reported in April, many people came to the Yangtze River Bridge with flowers and food to pay tribute to Pangmao.

The publication of the statement on Sunday surprised many Internet users, who thanked the police for clarifying the facts and giving "the opportunity to get to the truth."
