Suspended police officer dies in confrontation with four robbers in supermarket

A Trinidad and Tobago police officer dies in a confrontation with four robbers in an Arima supermarket

During an attempted robbery last weekend in Arima, Trinidad and Tobago, Acting Police Corporal Sheldon Peterson, 54, died after a confrontation with at least four armed suspects outside the Awesome Foods and Drinks supermarket. The incident also left two people injured by stray bullets.

The incident occurred on the night of Saturday, October 19, when a beige Nissan Almera vehicle stopped in the parking lot of the supermarket, located on the corner of Olton Road and Eastern Main Road. The armed suspects tried to force Peterson into the premises, but the officer managed to draw his authorized weapon and fired at them, forcing them to disperse. However, one of the attackers returned fire, seriously wounding Peterson, who collapsed at the entrance of the supermarket.

The suspects quickly returned to the vehicle and fled the scene, leaving Peterson dead. Despite the prompt response of local authorities and emergency services, the officer died at the scene. Two bystanders, aged 62 and 40, were also injured during the shooting and were taken to Arima District Hospital. Both are in stable condition and out of danger.

Authorities reported that 12 9mm bullet casings were recovered at the scene, but Peterson's weapon, a 9mm pistol, was not found. It is presumed that the attackers stole it before fleeing. Although search operations were carried out in the area, the suspects have not yet been found.

The incident has caused concern among residents, who fear the increase in crime in the area. One of the neighbours, who arrived at the scene after hearing the gunshots, said he found Peterson seriously injured, while another of the injured was on the ground bleeding. Despite widespread fear, many said the recurring violence has desensitised them.

Peterson, who was on leave from his police duties and working as security, was appreciated in the community for his kindness and willingness to help neighbours. His death has been described as a significant loss for the community of Arima. The president of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Welfare Association, Gideon Dickson, described Peterson's actions as heroic and announced a reward for anyone who provides information leading to the capture of those responsible.

On the other hand, police sources expressed their anger that Peterson was left alone in the confrontation. According to reports, two other armed officers were at the scene, but one of them decided to hide rather than confront the suspects, which may have given Peterson a chance to survive.

Investigations into the case continue as authorities work to identify and capture those involved in this unfortunate incident.
