Police apply lethal force against pitbull dog during a procedure

The injured officer received five days of disability. The Police in Manizales explains the reason for the use of lethal force

In a police procedure carried out on Friday, September 13 in the San Sebastián neighborhood of Manizales, Colombia, a pitbull dog was shot down after attacking an officer. The incident occurred after the Police were alerted by a woman about a family fight in which her brother, 39 years old, was upset and threatened her with a knife.

According to the official statement, the agents of the Metropolitan Police of Manizales arrived at the scene to deal with the situation. When they tried to intervene, the man also threatened them with the knife and gave the order to his pitbull dog to attack the officers.

The animal lunged at one of the police officers, biting him on the forearm and holding him trapped for almost a minute, as seen in a video circulating on social media. In the images, the officer unsuccessfully tries to free himself from the animal while the attacker can be heard urging the dog to continue the attack.

The attack not only affected the officer, but also the attacker's sister, who received a bite on the leg when she tried to help. The situation was aggravated by the fact that there was also a 14-month-old baby at the scene, which increased the level of risk.

After several failed attempts to separate the dog from the officer, the injured officer's partner asked the attacker's sister if she authorized shooting the animal. After repeating the request several times, she finally shot the dog, ending the attack. The affected officer received medical attention and was granted five days of disability.

The Manizales Police Command defended the use of force under the precautionary principle, citing the presence of the baby and the imminent danger to the life of the officer. In addition, it was highlighted that two minors were arrested for obstructing public functions and the man responsible for the situation was transferred to the Protection Transfer Center (CTP) to safeguard his life.

The authorities reiterated the call to the community to report any situation that threatens security and tranquility, through the line 123 or the number of the nearest quadrant.
