2-Year-Old Boy Fires Father's Gun, Killing Mother

A tragedy shakes a family in Brazil. The case occurred in Rio Verde, Mato Grosso, and is being investigated as negligent homicide

Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil — An unexpected tragedy occurred in the city of Rio Verde, Mato Grosso, in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul. A 27-year-old woman lost her life after being accidentally shot by her 2-year-old son, who handled a firearm that his father had left on the table.

The dramatic incident occurred on Friday, June 13, at the family's residence. According to the Civil Police, the weapon—a 9mm Glock pistol registered in the father's name—was handed to the child while he was playing.

As she handled it, the trigger was pulled, and the shot directly hit his mother, Deborah Rodrigues Monteiro, causing injuries to her chest and arm.

A security camera installed in the home recorded the exact moment the boy grabbed the gun, innocently pointed it, and unknowingly fired it.

After the impact, the young mother tried to get up but ended up collapsing on the floor. The father, a farmer who was in the same house, quickly helped his wife and took her to the hospital, but unfortunately, she did not survive.

Authorities confirmed that the weapon was legally registered and that the father cooperated with the police at all times. The pistol and magazine were seized for analysis by forensic experts, while the man will face an investigation for negligent homicide.

The father stated in his statement that he did not realize when the boy accessed the weapon. Although he remains free, the investigation is ongoing, and other measures may be applied as the proceedings progress.

The case was also referred to the Guardianship Council to determine whether the minor should receive psychological support or some other protective measure.
