Woman tries to get loan with dead man in wheelchair

The incident, captured on video, shows the macabre scene as bank employees try to intervene

In a macabre act that has outraged the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a woman was arrested after trying to obtain a loan of 17,000 reais at a bank branch in Bangu, in the western part of the city, using the corpse of a man in a wheelchair as part of his ploy.

Bank employees were alarmed by the strange behavior of Érika de Souza Vieira Nunes, who claimed to be the niece of the deceased, identified as Paulo Roberto Braga, 68 years old. According to witnesses, the woman tried to pretend that the man, who had already died a few hours ago, had signed the document necessary for the loan.

In a video captured by bank employees, the woman is seen holding the man's head and talking to him as if he were alive, while she tried to persuade him to sign the document. "Dude, are you listening? You need to sign," she is heard saying.

The police, upon arriving at the scene, confirmed that the man was dead and that the woman was trying to commit fraud using her corpse. The woman, during her statement at the police station, stated that she was in charge of taking care of her uncle, but the authorities are investigating whether she really had any family ties with him.

The delegate in charge of the case explained that the investigation is ongoing to determine if other people were involved in the attempted fraud and to clarify if the man was alive at the time of making the loan request.
