Venezuelan and Haitian migrants drown in desperate attempt to cross a river

Migrants, in their search for a better life, risked crossing the Rio Grande despite warnings

In a chilling tragedy that has shocked public opinion, two migrants, one Venezuelan and the other Haitian, lost their lives by drowning in a desperate attempt to cross the Rio Grande from Tamaulipas to the United States.

The fateful event, captured in a video circulating on social networks, shows the distressing moment in which both men are trapped in a muddy area known as La Poza, in the Modelo neighborhood, Matamoros, Tamaulipas.

The Venezuelan migrant, identified as Carlos and father of two minors, was accompanied by his wife and other traveling companions. According to witnesses, the group was trying to cross the border towards Brownsville, Texas, when they became trapped in the mud that, at that point, forms a dangerous whirlpool. Despite warnings about the danger of the area, they decided to take the risk.

Jonas, another Venezuelan migrant who witnessed the tragedy, said that his colleagues were warned that the place was unsafe, but they ignored the warnings. In an attempt to get to the other side, they were trapped in the mud, with the Haitian migrant clinging to a Venezuelan and his brother. Despite the efforts of other migrants who attempted to throw ropes and branches to assist in the rescue, the current and mud prevented any rescue attempt.

The video shared on social networks shows the heartbreaking moment of the tragedy, even with the presence of members of the US border patrol, who seem to observe the situation without intervening. So far, neither Mexican nor American authorities have issued statements about the tragic incident, which highlights the danger and desperation that migrants face in their search for a better life.
