RIO DE JANEIRO – A violent shooting in the early hours of Saturday (November 30) left one military police officer dead and one Argentine tourist wounded at a kiosk located in Praia do Pontal, in Paraty. According to the authorities, the attack, which also left two other people wounded, would have been a reprisal linked to the war between rival criminal factions.
The incident occurred when an armed group arrived at the scene in a vehicle and opened fire indiscriminately against the people present at the kiosk. In total, four people were injured: two military police officers, an Argentine tourist and a man identified as a drug trafficking suspect with a history of 12 arrests.
Military Police corporal Elieze Oliveira da Silva, 38, assigned to the BPM in Angra dos Reis, died after being hit by gunfire. Another victim, a military police officer, was taken along with the Argentine tourist to the Hugo Miranda Municipal Hospital, where both received medical attention and were later discharged.
Meanwhile, the drug trafficking suspect died on the spot as a result of the attack.
Security camera images captured the exact moment when four men armed with rifles and equipped with bulletproof vests, combat boots and "ninja caps" shot at those present at the kiosk. After the attack, the attackers quickly left the scene.
The head of the Paraty police station, Marcelo Russo, said that "there are strong indications that this attack is a settling of scores between rival criminal factions." Authorities are using the recordings and witness testimonies to advance their investigation.
The site of the shooting, Praia do Pontal, is a popular beach among tourists and locals, but violence in the region has increased due to fighting between criminal groups. This reflects the impact of these disputes on the safety of the population and visitors in tourist areas.
