Husband stabs wife in street

Police in Phuc Yen city, Vinh Phuc province, Vietnam, are investigating an assault case that took place on July 27. The incident occurred in Trung Trac district at around 4pm, when Nguyen Van Phuong, 35, repeatedly attacked his wife, Vu Thi Luyen, with a knife while she was selling lottery tickets on the sidewalk of Soc Son Street.

According to police reports, Phuong, a resident of Trung Nhi neighbourhood, arrived at the scene on a motorbike, armed with a sharp knife, and charged at Ms Luyen.

The chase ended when Phuong caught up with his wife on the sidewalk of a nearby house and wounded her multiple times in the chest, abdomen and forearms, leaving her seriously injured. After the attack, Phuong returned home to put away the weapon and then turned himself in to the Vinh Yen city police.

Local authorities, after receiving the emergency call, transferred Ms Luyen to a local hospital. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was later transferred to the Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital in Hanoi for emergency treatment. So far, her health condition remains critical.

Nguyen Van Phuong and Vu Thi Luyen, who have two children, were in the process of separating at the time of the incident. Phuc Yen police are collecting witness statements and consolidating evidence to clarify the motives behind the attack and the circumstances surrounding it.

So far, Nguyen Van Phuong is charged with attempted femicide.
