Mara Núbia Borges, 36, and her daughter Laura Beatriz, five years old, were run over while crossing Carlos Lindenberg Avenue in Vila Velha, on the night of Wednesday, August 21. The two were crossing in the pedestrian zone when a car that ran a red light hit them, throwing them about 20 meters away.
After the accident, Mara was admitted to the Hospital de Urgencia y Emergencia (HEUE) in Vitória, where she was treated for her injuries, and will have to undergo three more surgeries due to the severity of her injuries. Her husband, Heidson Fantoni, was admitted to the Children's Hospital in the capital, where Laura Beatriz is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), intubated and with severe head trauma.
The girl, who has autism and other mental disorders, was sedated, but doctors began to remove the sedation to assess her reflexes.
Laura's father, Heidson Fantoni, recounted with anguish how he heard the impact without knowing that the victims were his wife and daughter. According to his testimony, the little girl had been taken to the health center because she was feeling unwell.
After finishing the consultation, Mara and Laura were heading to the car parked on a nearby street when they were run over. Heidson expressed his despair at not being able to react at the time and confirmed that his wife could not move her legs and that his daughter was in serious condition, fighting for her life.
The driver responsible for the accident, identified as Wenderson Fagundes Melo, 20, showed up at the Vila Velha Regional Delegation one hour and twenty minutes after the incident.
He was subjected to an alcohol test, which was negative, but he did not present the vehicle, claiming that it was in a workshop. Wenderson was released after paying bail, although the Civil Police did not disclose the amount.
The case has caused outrage on social media, especially due to the lack of immediate assistance by the driver and the fact that he was not the owner of the vehicle, but his son.
