On October 28, 2024, a tragic event shook the Arenal Segunda Sección neighborhood, in the Venustiano Carranza municipality of Mexico City. An eight-year-old boy, identified as Luis, lost his life when he was run over by a truck driven by a 25-year-old woman, identified as Fda Donnet. The incident occurred at the intersection of Mextli and Circunvalación streets and was immediately reported to the Secretariat of Citizen Security, which went to the scene after receiving an emergency alert.
The paramedics who responded to the call diagnosed the minor as having no vital signs, attributing the cause of his death to a head injury. The authorities proceeded to cordon off the area and notified the forensic services for the corresponding proceedings. A witness at the scene identified the woman who was driving the vehicle, which facilitated her arrest shortly after the incident. The detainee was transferred to the Public Prosecutor's Office along with the seized van.
Release of the driver and reaction on social networks
A few days later, the Attorney General's Office of Mexico City (FGJCDMX) decided to release the driver, an action that provoked a strong reaction on social networks. Journalist Carlos Jiménez, known as 'C4', shared the news of the release on the 'X' platform (previously Twitter), attaching a video of the incident that shows the moment when the minor, identified as Luis, was run over.
In his post, Jiménez stressed that the prosecutor's decision was made without previously notifying the minor's family, which generated complaints from the parents, who pointed out inadequate treatment by the authorities.
The video shared by the journalist, which includes sensitive images, generated a wide debate among the platform's users. Some Internet users supported the driver's release, arguing that the child crossed the street recklessly and without supervision.
However, others highlighted that the driver also had responsibility, especially for not stopping after the accident. Opinions were divided, with some comments questioning both the parents' lack of supervision and the driver's reaction.
