Iran executes 19-year-old wrestling champion Saleh Mohammadi

Iran executes 19-year-old wrestler after protests, sparking international condemnation for human rights violations

A 19-year-old Iranian wrestler was publicly executed in the city of Qom, in a case that has generated strong international outrage and once again puts the spotlight on repression in Iran.

The athlete, identified as Saleh Mohammadi, was sentenced to death after being accused of participating in the murder of two security officers during anti-government protests in January. According to authorities, the events occurred during riots where the accused allegedly attacked the officers with knives.

The execution was not an isolated incident. Two other young men, accused of the same crimes, were also executed alongside him. Authorities asserted that the judicial process complied with legal procedures and that the accused confessed.

However, human rights organizations have strongly criticized the case. They allege that the confessions were obtained under torture and that the trial failed to meet basic due process guarantees. Furthermore, they warn that these executions are part of a strategy to intimidate those protesting against the regime.

The young athlete had excelled in wrestling, even competing internationally and winning a medal in a tournament in Russia, which has given his case greater international attention.

These executions come amid a wave of repression following the mass protests that shook Iran. Independent organizations estimate thousands of deaths and tens of thousands of arrests, figures far higher than the official count, generating global concern.

The case is reminiscent of previous situations in which Iranian athletes have been executed after participating in protests, leading activists and international organizations to demand sanctions and stronger action against the country.
