An exchange of words on a street in southern California turned violent on Wednesday afternoon, culminating in a shooting that left two men injured and the attacker fleeing the scene. The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 14 around 3:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of West Florida Avenue, near South Western Avenue, in the city of Hemet. The episode was captured by nearby surveillance cameras.
The video shows two men walking on the sidewalk of Florida Avenue, in front of Vero's Taco Shop. One of them, dressed in a white T-shirt, jeans and a cap, raises his arms and shouts across the street, exclaiming "To hell with your neighborhood, friend!" as they continue their ride.
A few minutes later, a man wearing dark pants and a light-colored hooded sweatshirt approaches the two bike walkers, his right hand firmly in his pocket. After an exchange of words, the man in the white T-shirt lunges at the cyclist, who pulls out a firearm and fires two shots, knocking his attacker to the ground. The second man, wearing dark shorts, a dark T-shirt, and a cap, lunges at the shooter, who responds by firing three more rounds.
Despite being shot, the man in the dark shorts manages to confront the shooter, starting a fight in the middle of West Florida Avenue as the vehicles come to a stop. During the struggle, the wounded man manages to strip the attacker of his sweatshirt and knocks him off the bike.
The video ends by showing the shooter fleeing on foot down the center of the four-lane highway toward South Western Avenue.
Hemet Police Department officials said they responded to the scene, but details are limited because the case remains under active investigation. Action Eye News, which captured the video, reported that both injured men were taken to the hospital, though their condition is unknown.
