Businessman Kills Pregnant Wife, Two Children, and Then His Own
Restaurant owner in Texas allegedly killed his pregnant wife and two young children inside his Houston mansion
What appeared to be a successful and enviable family turned out to be one of the most heartbreaking scenes uncovered this week in the United States. A well-known Texas restaurateur was accused by authorities of killing his pregnant wife, his two young children, and then himself inside his home, valued at over $1.2 million.

The incident came to light on the afternoon of Monday, May 4, in the exclusive River Oaks neighborhood, one of Houston's wealthiest areas, after a nanny and a relative alerted the police when they hadn't heard from the family for more than 24 hours. Officers responded to the residence to conduct a welfare check and, upon entering, found all four members of the household deceased inside the home.
The victims were identified as Matthew Mitchell, 52; his wife, Thy Mitchell, 39, who was also pregnant; and the couple's two children, an 8-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy.

According to initial findings shared by Houston investigators, all four had gunshot wounds, and evidence inside the house suggests that Matthew Mitchell shot his wife and children first before taking his own life. The case is being treated as a suspected family murder-suicide, while forensic investigations continue to reconstruct exactly what happened inside the mansion.
The news caused even more shock when the identities of the victims were revealed. Matthew and Thy Mitchell were well-known figures in Houston's business and culinary communities. Both were owners of the popular restaurant Traveler's Table and its spin-off, Traveler's Cart, establishments renowned for their international cuisine and appearances on television cooking shows.

Moreover, Matthew was not only a restaurateur: years earlier, he had served as executive president of the Texas Center for Drug Development, a pharmaceutical research firm, while Thy was an active member of the Texas Restaurant Association. Just in September 2025, the couple had been recognized as "Restaurateurs of the Year" in Houston, solidifying a public image of success, wealth, and stability.
However, behind closed doors, something broke irreversibly.
The children had last been seen on Sunday and, according to local reports, were found in their own beds. The scene shocked residents of River Oaks, an area accustomed to luxury, tranquility, and virtually no recent history of similar incidents.

“We’ve never seen anything like this here,” a local resident told local media, as other neighbors approached in disbelief to observe the police presence around the property.
So far, authorities have not revealed what might have motivated Matthew Mitchell to take such an extreme action. However, the investigation remains open, and more details about the background of a story that wiped out an entire family in a matter of minutes are expected to emerge in the coming hours.
