Double homicide: Two people murdered in a downtown bar

In the early hours of Wednesday, July 17, two people were murdered inside a bar in the center of Mantenópolis, in the northwest of Espírito Santo. The victims, Laila Ventura de Oliveira, 30, and José Maria Vieira Júnior, 33, died after being shot by João Barbosa Filho, who remains a fugitive.

A security camera shows the moment of the crime. The video reveals João calling his 14-year-old son and trying to put the gun in her hand, while a person tries to reason with him.

The boy, in a state of panic, begs his father to leave: "no dad, let me run, please... let me run." At that moment, Laila appears at the door of the bar and confronts João, who responds: "I'm going to kill you."

After a failed attempt to cock the gun, he finally shoots Laila in the face at point-blank range, who died hours later in the hospital. Later, the attacker enters the bar and fatally shoots José Maria.

The Civil Police of Espírito Santo has identified João Barbosa Filho as the suspect in the double homicide and has issued a temporary arrest warrant. According to delegate Celina Cruz, preliminary investigations indicate that a dispute at the bar led to the homicides.

Renata Ventura de Oliveira, Laila's sister, arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting and helped her wounded sister. "The only thing we have today is pain, a lot of pain, there is no explanation for the amount of pain we are feeling," said Renata, who also mentioned that they knew the aggressor and that he frequented his houses.

A witness to the event, who preferred to remain anonymous, reported that the aggressor arrived armed and that, after an argument with Laila, he shot first at her and then at José Maria, who tried to flee without success. After the attack, João Barbosa Filho escaped on a bicycle.

The bodies of the victims were transferred to the Colatina Legal Medical Service for an autopsy and subsequent delivery to their families. The community of Mantenópolis is shocked by the tragic event and the authorities continue the search for the suspect.
