Melanie Barragán, a young woman assaulted by her ex-partner, was arrested for alleged theft from a store

Melanie Barragán, a UAT student and victim of gender violence, was arrested in a shopping center in Tamaulipas

Melanie Barragán, a student at the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas (UAT) and known for a recent case of gender violence, was arrested on Friday, December 27 at the Galerías Altama shopping center in Tampico, Tamaulipas. The young woman was accused of allegedly stealing clothing from a department store.

The arrest occurred during the afternoon when security personnel from the store informed the authorities about the alleged theft. Melanie was handed over to agents of the State Guard and transferred to the municipal cells. According to reports, she was released after paying a bail of 900 pesos, since the establishment did not file a formal complaint and clarified that the situation could have been a misunderstanding at the cashier's office.

Melanie's mother told the Attorney General's Office of Tamaulipas that her daughter was simply shopping and that the incident was a mistake. So far, no additional legal actions have been announced.

This incident occurs a few months after Melanie was brutally attacked by her ex-partner, Christian "N", at a costume party on October 31 in Ciudad Madero. The attack, recorded and shared on social media, showed how Melanie suffered fractures to her face and injuries to one eye after being beaten and dragged.

The attacker was on the run until December 6, when he was captured in Escobedo, Nuevo León. Currently, he faces preventive detention at the Comprehensive Justice Center in Altamira, Tamaulipas, while the legal process against him continues. Melanie has demanded justice, stressing the need for the case not to go unpunished.

The case of Melanie Barragán, both her complaint and her recent arrest, has generated an intense debate on gender violence and the re-victimization of women.
