Driver Intentionally Hits 16-Year-Old Girl, Killing Her in Queens
A drunk and unlicensed driver was arrested in Queens after intentionally hitting a 16-year-old girl, killing her
A tragic incident that occurred early Saturday morning in Queens left a 16-year-old girl dead and her mother and stepfather injured. The perpetrator, identified as Edwin Cruz Gómez, a 38-year-old Honduran resident of Uniondale, was arrested by police after fleeing and crashing his gray 2009 Chevrolet Suburban a few blocks from the scene.
According to the investigation, it all began around 4:10 a.m. at Roosevelt Avenue and Benham Street, when the victim, Jhoanny Gómez-Alvarez, was walking with her 32-year-old mother, stepfather, and boyfriend. At the time, Cruz Gómez, under the influence of alcohol, was with other men outside a restaurant.
Authorities said the suspect made lewd comments toward the teenager and her mother, even offering them money in exchange for sexual favors. This situation sparked an argument between Cruz Gómez and Jhoanny's companions, which escalated into a physical fight. Witnesses managed to separate the men, while the young woman and her family members drove away.

Intentional Hit-and-Run
Shortly after, Cruz Gómez got into his truck and, according to the prosecution, deliberately accelerated on the sidewalk, hitting Jhoanny, her mother, and stepfather. The teenager was struck from behind against a pole and died at the scene, while her mother suffered leg injuries and was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in stable condition. Her stepfather was also injured.
A witness recounted: "He was driving, then made a turn and hit the girl. He did it on purpose."
Attempted Escape and Capture
After the accident, security cameras show how Cruz Gómez reversed, drove the wrong way, and ended up crashing into a parked vehicle. He ran away but was arrested by police shortly after. At the time of his arrest, he showed signs of intoxication and his blood alcohol level was 0.137%, almost double the legal limit.
Charges Against Him
The detainee faces multiple charges, including:
Murder.
Vehicular Homicide.
Driving under the influence of alcohol.
Driving without a valid license.
Leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
Four counts of weapons possession.
During his arrest, he remained silent and was taken to a local hospital for injuries from the crash, which delayed his appearance in Queens Criminal Court.
If convicted, Cruz Gomez could face 25 years to life in prison. His next hearing is scheduled for this Friday, September 19.
