The death of Luis Andrés Colmenares, which occurred on October 31, 2010, became one of the most media and commented cases in Colombia. Colmenares, a student at the Universidad de los Andes, was found dead in the canal of El Virrey park in Bogotá in the early hours of November 1, 2010. This year marks 14 years since that tragic event, and Colmenares' family has filed an appeal for cassation before the Supreme Court, which has reactivated the case against Moreno and Quintero. On October 7, 2011, Laura Moreno and Jessy Quintero were captured for the crimes of false testimony and improper co-authorship of aggravated homicide. Later, in June 2012, Carlos Cárdenas, Moreno's ex-boyfriend, was captured. The trial against Moreno and Quintero began on February 28, 2012, and in October 2014, the Bogotá Court acquitted Cárdenas of the crime of aggravated homicide. In November 2016, the Prosecutor's Office and the Attorney General's Office requested the conviction of the two young women, but in 2017, they were finally acquitted by the Superior Court of Bogotá, a decision that was confirmed in 2021.
However, the Supreme Court of Justice has admitted two lawsuits that seek to revoke the acquittal of Moreno and Quintero for the death of Colmenares. These lawsuits were presented by the victims and representatives of the Colmenares family, through lawyer Jaime Lombana and the Attorney General's Office.
The decision seeks to annul the acquittal issued by the Superior Court of Bogotá in 2017, arguing that the Prosecutor's Office failed to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that Colmenares' death was a homicide.
The recent appearance of Moreno and Quintero in Madrid was revealed by Jorge Colmenares, brother of Luis Andrés, who expressed his indignation on social networks.
