Police murder reveals alleged links to drug trafficking

The murder of Byron Miguel Morejón Aguilar, second corporal of the National Police, shook the population of Lago Agrio in the province of Sucumbíos, Ecuador. The crime, recorded on May 1 in the Las Palmas neighborhood, was captured by a security camera, revealing the brutality with which three armed hitmen attacked the agent.

Morejón Aguilar was approached by the murderers when leaving his house, who shot him in the head. After the attack, the hitmen fled in a black vehicle. The Police have remained secretive about the details of the case, but the video of the murder went viral on social networks on May 4, reviving public interest.

A complaint filed by a Sucumbíos prosecutor could shed light on the environment in which Morejón Aguilar found himself. According to the document, the corporal would have tried to assassinate the prosecutor on December 8, 2023, during a hearing at the Lago Agrio Multicompetent Judicial Unit.

On that occasion, the prosecutor received warnings that "they wanted to hit him in the head" due to his refusal to collaborate in a drug case involving Morejón Aguilar.

The complaining prosecutor explained that two other prosecutors alerted him to the danger and he was escorted by Anti-Narcotics agents to the Sucumbíos Provincial Prosecutor's Office.

The complaint also details that Morejón Aguilar allegedly hired three hitmen to assassinate the prosecutor, traveling in three vehicles, of which only one was located on the road to San Vicente, Lago Agrio.

Morejón Aguilar's connection to drug trafficking dates back to November of last year, when a case of drug trafficking was discovered in Lumbaqui, Sucumbíos.

In that case, Morejón Aguilar was linked and, apparently, hired hitmen to eliminate the prosecutor who was leading the investigation.
