Journalist Mauricio Solís murdered minutes after live report in Michoacán

On October 28, journalist Mauricio Solís was murdered in Uruapan, Michoacán, after conducting a live interview with the city's mayor, Carlos Manzo. This murder, which has shaken the journalistic profession, is added to the numerous attacks that place Mexico among the most dangerous countries to practice journalism in Latin America.

Solís, 25, was well-known in his community for his career in regional media, including the ABC newspaper of Uruapan, Grupo Radiorama and Enlace Zamora Noticias. At the time of his murder, the journalist was heading to another part of the city when he was intercepted and shot in the middle of a public street.

The attackers shot him twice, once in the supraclavicular region and once in the right arm, according to the preliminary report of the State Attorney General's Office (FGE), which began an investigation in accordance with the Homologated Protocol for Crimes against Freedom of Expression.

At the scene of the events, four .223-caliber shells were collected, while Solís' body was transferred to the Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO) for analysis. The Human Rights and Freedom of Expression Unit has issued protective measures for witnesses of the incident, who have been interviewed as part of this investigation. In turn, the authorities have implemented an operation to search for the vehicle and the people involved in the crime.

Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, governor of Michoacán, strongly condemned the murder on social media, saying that "there is no room for impunity" and pledging to bring those responsible to justice.

The Attorney General's Office of the State of Michoacán, in collaboration with the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection and the National Anti-Kidnapping Coordination, is working to intensify the investigation.
