Prisoner dies after trying to escape from a clinic by a police officer in Cúcuta

The man tried to escape once the handcuffs were removed, attacking the medical staff

A man identified as Ronald Yesid Mogollón Ovalles died after an escape attempt from a clinic at the San Fernando del Rodeo Police Station, in Cúcuta. The events occurred after a fight between prisoners, during which Mogollón Ovalles was stabbed several times in the back and arms. The man was detained on charges of theft and illegal possession of weapons, and he was also being investigated for homicide.

According to the information available, the fight broke out due to Mogollón Ovalles' opposition to visits by the detainees' relatives. During his transfer to a clinic to receive medical attention for injuries suffered in the fight, the man took the opportunity to try to escape. At that moment, while a nurse and a doctor treated him and removed his handcuffs, Mogollón Ovalles attacked the medical staff in an escape attempt.

A police officer guarding Mogollón Ovalles intervened and, after giving him several warnings, shot the man in the chest when he did not obey orders to stop. Despite subsequent medical efforts, Mogollón Ovalles died shortly after due to his injuries.

The acting commander of the Cúcuta Metropolitan Police, Colonel Carlos García, announced that disciplinary and criminal investigations will be carried out to clarify the facts. Authorities also plan to use security camera videos as evidence in the process.

Although Ronald Mogollón's record includes charges related to the crime of a teacher, his last arrest occurred on August 4 for a robbery in the Rudesindo Soto neighborhood. At that time, he was arrested along with another man and both were sent to prison.

In addition, Mogollón and his accomplice were being investigated for an alleged murder attempt on July 30 in the La Divina Pastora neighborhood. The victims provided information to police, which led to the capture of the two men at that time.
