In the early hours of Monday, September 9, the chief of the National Police, Rubén Cadavid Betancourt, 37, was killed in an alleged case of intolerance in the Santo Domingo neighborhood, south of Cali. Cadavid, who had 18 years of service in the institution, was hit by five shots inside a commercial establishment.
According to information provided by the commander in charge of the Cali Metropolitan Police, Colonel William Castaño Ramos, the attacker, identified as alias “Fausto,” was previously in prison for 17 years for homicide.
The incident was sparked by an argument inside the establishment, which ended when the assailant pulled out a firearm and shot the officer, killing him on the spot.
The assailant fled the scene in a burgundy vehicle, and authorities are working to capture him. Castaño Ramos called for the person responsible to surrender voluntarily, warning that if he does not, a formal arrest warrant will be issued against him.
Superintendent Rubén Cadavid Betancourt, who was assigned to the El Guabal station, leaves behind a nine-year-old son, with whom he lived with his grandparents and an aunt in Cali. During his 18 years of service, Cadavid was decorated on several occasions for his outstanding community work, earning the respect and appreciation of both his colleagues and the community.
Authorities continue to investigate the details of the murder and ask citizens to collaborate with any information that could help locate the person responsible.
