Mariah Carey's mother and sister die on the same day

The renowned singer Mariah Carey announced with deep sorrow the death of her mother, Patricia Carey, and her sister, Alison Carey, who died on the same day last weekend. In a statement issued on Monday, the artist expressed her desolation for the loss of two such loved ones. "It breaks my heart to have lost my mother last weekend," Carey said. "Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day," she added.

Patricia Carey, 87, was a former opera singer and singing teacher of Irish-American descent. Despite a complicated relationship, Mariah always showed love and respect towards her mother, who introduced her to the world of music. In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the singer described the challenges of her bond with Patricia, mentioning that it had caused "a lot of pain and confusion" due to the professional jealousy that arose between them.

On the other hand, Mariah's relationship with her sister Alison, 63, was also difficult. Alison, who was receiving palliative care before her passing, had maintained a distant relationship with Mariah for years. The singer revealed in her memoir that she had chosen to cut off all contact with Alison and her brother Morgan to protect herself emotionally and physically.

The relationship deteriorated further when Alison sued Mariah in 2021, demanding $1.25 million in compensation for the "immense emotional distress" caused by the revelations in the book, where Mariah accused Alison of having exposed her to traumatic situations during her childhood.

One of the traumatic situations from her childhood mentioned in the book was that her sister “sold” her instead of taking care of her, leaving her alone with a boyfriend who ended up becoming overly involved.

In 2016, several media outlets revealed that Alison Carey had contracted HIV from her past life of giving her body away for money.

The singer's father, Alfred Roy Carey (of Venezuelan descent), died in 2002 of cancer at the age of 72.
